Can AI diagnose a car?

By Frank ·

Short answer

No. AI can’t diagnose a car on its own. It can’t hear the noise, feel the brake pedal or put a meter on a sensor. What it can do is help a workshop get ready before the car arrives: turn the customer’s description, photos and video into likely causes, safety checks and questions to ask. A qualified tech still finds the fault and decides the fix.

What AI is good at

  • Reading what the customer sent. “Grinding when I brake, worse in the wet”, plus a photo of the wheel, gives real clues. AI can pull them together in seconds.
  • Matching the exact vehicle. One model can come with several engines and brake set-ups. The right variant means the right parts and labour times.
  • Ranking likely causes. Not an answer, a starting point, so the tech checks the most likely things first.
  • Flagging safety issues. Some symptoms mean the car shouldn’t be driven. Flagging them early lets the workshop say so.
  • Suggesting questions. “Does it happen when the engine is cold?” One good question before booking can save a test drive later.

What AI can’t do

  • Inspect the car. Most faults are confirmed by hand: a road test, a scan tool, a look on the hoist.
  • See what the customer didn’t send. A photo shows one angle. Noises, smells and faults that come and go rarely survive a phone video.
  • Take responsibility. A quote is a promise about price and work. Someone qualified has to stand behind it.
  • Know when it’s wrong. AI can give a neat answer that doesn’t fit the car. Its work needs checking, not trusting.

How workshops use it well

The best use is preparation, not diagnosis. A workshop that reads an AI report before the car arrives can book the right amount of time, line up likely parts and ask the customer better questions. Once the car is on the hoist, the tech checks the report against the car and throws out what doesn’t fit.

How Frank does it

Frank’s AI drafts a report for the workshop before the car arrives: likely causes, safety checks and questions to ask. It reads the customer’s description, the vehicle details, photos and the first few minutes of any video. It never sees the customer’s name or contact details. The report stays with the workshop. The customer only sees the quote the tech sends.

How Frank Intelligence works

If you’re the customer

A clear description, a few photos and a short video help the workshop prepare. They won’t replace an inspection, but they can mean a better first quote and fewer surprises at pick-up.

Questions

Can AI tell me what’s wrong with my car?
It can suggest likely causes from what you describe. Only an inspection by a qualified tech confirms the fault.
Is an AI quote accurate?
Treat AI as a starting point. An accurate quote comes from a tech who has seen the car.
Does Frank’s AI set the price?
No. The tech sets the price and puts their name to the quote.
